Convenience store coming to state road intersection

HANCOCK COUNTY — A property owner plans to start a convenience store at the southeast corner of State Roads 9 and 234.

Stephen Pavey, who owns the property, is petitioning Hancock County officials to rezone its classification from agricultural to commercial. The Hancock County Area Plan Commission voted 6-0 in late May to send a positive recommendation for that rezoning request to the Hancock County Commissioners.

While the property had been zoned agricultural, it had been granted special exceptions to operate as a gas station and then for auto sales throughout its history.

HVAC business moving to McCordsville

McCORDSVILLE — A Lawrence-based heating, ventilation and air conditioning company is looking to move its headquarters to Hancock County.

Breedlove Dobbs plans to develop a 3,000-square foot, two-story building on the north side of North Railroad Street between Mt. Comfort Road and Depot Street in McCordsville.

Company owner Tom Rich said he hopes to move in about a year, as the company’s current lease expires in May 2021.

Resources available to farmers hurt by pandemic

WASHINGTON — Agricultural producers can now apply for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, which provides direct payments to offset impacts from the coronavirus pandemic.

The application and a payment calculator are now available online, and USDA’s Farm Service Agency staff members are available via phone, fax and online tools to help producers complete applications. The agency set up a call center in order to simplify how they serve new customers across the nation.

Applications will be accepted through Aug. 28, 2020. Through the program, USDA is making available $16 billion for financial assistance to producers of agricultural commodities who have suffered a 5%-or-greater price decline due to COVID-19 and face additional significant marketing costs as a result of lower demand, surplus production and disruptions to shipping patterns and the orderly marketing of commodities.

Producers can download the program’s application and other eligibility forms from farmers.gov/cfap. Also, on that web page, producers can find a payment calculator to help identify sales and inventory records needed to apply and calculate potential payments.
