GREENFIELD — A COVID-19 testing site has opened in Greenfield as a part of a statewide campaign to allow more Indiana residents to be tested for the disease.

The site is located in the Indiana National Guard armory at 410 Apple St. Tests are free, and those looking to be tested do not have to have COVID-19 symptoms.

While there is no charge for testing, visitors are encouraged to bring any health insurance coverage information with them.

The site is part of a state COVID-19 testing expansion program with OptumServe Health Services of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The state announced the initiative late last month with plans to open 50 testing sites at Indiana National Guard armories by mid-May. Officials’ goal is for the campaign to do 100,000 tests a month. Sites use nasopharyngeal swabs for testing and report results to the Indiana State Department of Health.

Aaron Albright, with external communications for Optum, told the Daily Reporter in an email that the Greenfield site can do about 132 tests a day and that most people should get their results about 48 hours after they’re tested.

Tests are performed inside the building, not curbside. Albright said the company follows all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and clinical protocols, including social distancing.

“We also only schedule a limited number of people at a time to minimize the number of patients in the testing space in order to reduce risk of exposure,” he added.

The Indiana Joint Information Center told the Daily Reporter in an email that the Indiana State Department of Health identified National Guard sites for the campaign’s initial 20 OptumServe locations because they could be opened quickly.

“Some of those locations are being moved to accommodate greater traffic flow,” the email continued. “For the additional 30 sites that have opened in the last week, ISDH worked to identify locations in areas where testing is limited to ensure that Hoosiers across the state had access to COVID-19 testing, then coordinated with local health departments to identify the best locations in those counties.”

Hancock County also has COVID-19 testing locations at Hancock Regional Hospital’s COVID-19 triage clinic and at First Care urgent care clinic, both in Greenfield.

The state department of health has a map of COVID-19 testing locations across Indiana at coronavirus.in.gov/2524.htm.
