GREENFIELD — Bentley, the beloved canine whose calming presence who helped hundreds of children become more confident readers, has died.

His owner, Nickie Scott, who created the nonprofit Bentley’s Buddies around the idea of having children read out loud to dogs, announced the Bentley’s death early today.

“B passed away last evening,” she wrote in a post shared early today (March 12) on Facebook. “He had been sick, and his body would not fight any more. He went on his own terms. I was by his side, and he did not suffer. Thank you all who supported Bentley during his sickness.”

A memorial service will be held at a later date, Scott wrote.
