Hospital should not be in development business

To the editor:

I have been reading the Daily Reporter stories and the letters to the editor on the $30 million to be spent by Hancock Regional Hospital on relocating four of its side businesses, as well as the $23 million it proposes to spend on general development of ground at I-70 and Mt. Comfort Road.

Only Congress throws around money like this. For those who have complained about the high cost of medical care, it appears that we don’t need to look any further for the cause than our very own hospital.

How can this be? If CEO Steve Long won’t reconsider his priorities, then the hospital board should. If the board won’t assume responsibility, then the county commissioners should step in, since they appointed the board.

I would not want a developer to operate on me at the hospital, and I would not want a hospital to assume they know something about developing land. Let each handle their own specialty. This makes no sense.
