Local wrestlers place at IHSGW State Finals

Greenfield-Central’s Liv Quigley and Mt. Vernon’s Sierra Pienkowski both finished as place winners at the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling State Finals.

Quigley finished fifth overall at 138 pounds during Friday’s State Finals at Kokomo’s Memorial Gymnasium. Pienkowski was seventh at 138.

Quigley, who is Greenfield-Central’s second female state qualifier in school history, opened the night with a loss by fall to Bellmont’s Trinity Coyne before winning two straight matches for fifth place.

Quigley regrouped by defeating Pienkowski by decision 6-2 in the consolation bracket. She placed fifth by pinning Paoli’s Hannah Albertson in 4:20.

Pienkowski, who entered state as the No. 1 seed, lost a tough match in the first round in sudden victory 7-5 against Logansport’s Liberty Sutton. After losing to Quigley, Pienkowski rebounded with a fall over Lebanon’s Emerson Wolfbrandt in 1:50 for seventh place.

Royals to induct 2 into Hall of Fame

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will induct two new members into the Eastern Hancock Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday night. This year’s inductees are Robert Wampler and Steven Stunda.

Wampler came to Charlottesville High School as a teacher in 1962 and remained at Eastern Hancock until his retirement in 1991. He was head track coach for 16 seasons and head cross country coach for six seasons. Prior to beginning his teaching career, he served as an officer in the United States Army, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in the Korean Conflict.

Stunda is a 2011 Eastern Hancock graduate. He earned 12 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball.

The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of the boys varsity basketball game vs. Shenandoah that tips at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Wampler and Stunda will bring the total members in the EH Hall of Fame to 34 individuals and three teams.

Fast Pitch Softball registration now open

Registration for the 2020 spring seasons for the Greenfield Fast Pitch Softball Association is now open through March 13.

Cost is $120 per player for for 8-under, 10-under, 11-under and up. Those parents that work a two-hour concession stand shift will receive a $20 reimbursement.

The cost for T-ball is $40 per player with no early bird or concession reimbursement.

The 6-under league is $70 per player with no early bird, but a $20 reimbursement for parents that work a two-hour concession stand shift.

Those families that are registering for 8-under and up can save up to $20 if they sign up by Feb. 17.

Opening Day is scheduled for April 18.
