Marauders HOF induction ceremony set

The Mt. Vernon High School Athletic Department is inducting its second Hall of Fame class on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The induction ceremony will begin at the conclusion of the junior varsity boys basketball game against Hamilton Southeastern and will feature three former Marauders that have had an impact on the history of Mt. Vernon athletics.

This years inductees include: Carolyn Oldfather, the first girls basketball coach at Mt. Vernon (1975-1979); Brett Neylon, a former cross-country and track state finalist (1981-1985) and Greg Werner, for football and baseball (1981-1985).

The junior varsity basketball game is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m., with the ceremony expected to take place sometime shortly after 7 p.m.

IHSAA’s Cox announces upcoming retirement

Bobby Cox, Commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Inc. since 2011, announced to the IHSAA Executive Committee his intention to retire effective Aug. 1.

Cox’s announcement came Thursday morning as part of the group’s January meeting.

Cox, 63, and who will be completing a 41-year career in education, joined the IHSAA as an assistant commissioner in 2000 and began his tenure as the IHSAA’s eighth commissioner on Feb. 1, 2011 succeeding Blake Ress (2000-11).

“It has been an honor to serve as Commissioner of this great organization,” says Cox. “I will take away fond memories and a sense of accomplishment on behalf of our member schools and thousands of Hoosier students knowing that education-based athletics remains vitally important and relevant in our state.”

The Personnel Committee announced that a plan to begin the search for a new commissioner will be developed and presented to the IHSAA Executive Committee at its February meeting.

Fast Pitch Softball registration now open

Registration for the 2020 spring seasons for the Greenfield Fast Pitch Softball Association is now open through March 13.

Cost is $120 per player for for 8-under, 10-under, 11-under and up. Those parents that work a two-hour concession stand shift will receive a $20 reimbursement.

The cost for T-ball is $40 per player with no early bird or concession reimbursement.

The 6-under league is $70 per player with no early bird, but a $20 reimbursement for parents that work a two-hour concession stand shift.

Those families that are registering for 8-under and up can save up to $20 if they sign up by Feb. 17.

Opening Day is scheduled for April 18.
