Locals Players selected to AP All-State football teams

The Class 5A state champion New Palestine Dragons had three players elected to the 2019 The Associated Press All-State football team.

Senior Charlie Spegal, the state’s all-time leading career rusher, was named all-state as a running back. On the other side of the ball, senior Kyle King was named all-state as a defensive lineman, while Maxen Hook was selected all-state at defensive back.

Dragons’ Blake Austin was an 5A honorable mention at wide receiver. Matt Brown was honorable mention as a defensive lineman. Linebacker Aven Jones was honored long with defensive back Brody Luker.

The 4A Mt. Vernon Marauders earned several honorable mentions, including wide receiver Dawan Langston, linebacker Charlie Moore, defensive back Rylan Cole and defensive back Keegan Labelle.

The Class 2A Eastern Hancock Royals had one honorable mention in Houston Swan at quarterback.

Top performers honored as IBCA Players of the Week

While holiday tournaments and single-day showcases wrapped up last week around the state, Week 9’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week winners posted double-doubles, triple-doubles, and two female players surpassed the 20-rebound plateau in their games.

Gary 21st Century senior Johnell Davis, McCutcheon freshman Dravyn Gibbs-Lawhorn, Greensburg senior Andrew Welage, LaPorte senior Nyla Asad, Indiana School for the Deaf senior Anya Pothorski (20 rebounds vs. Speedway), Noblesville freshman Ashlynn Shade, and Greenwood Christian junior Isabella Reed (23 rebounds vs. Park Tudor) were selected as recipients for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 4 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Davis is the boys’ recipient in District-1, while Asad is the girls’ recipient in District-1. Gibbs-Lawhorn is the boys’ winner in District-2, while Pothorski and Shade are girls’ co-winners in District-2. Welage is the boys’ honoree in District-3, while Reed is the girls’ honoree in District-3.

Bowling fundraiser set at Strike Force Lanes

Registration is now open for the 12th Annual Strike a Difference for FUSE Bowl-a-thon. The year’s event will be held on Feb. 8 at Strike Force Lanes in Greenfield.

Bowling will start at 5 p.m. with check-in at 4 p.m. Door prizes will be given away during the event. Teams of five bowlers can participate, and individuals are also invited to compete.

All bowlers are challenged to raise a minimum of $100 per person in sponsorship or $500 per team with a special prize for the top individual fundraiser.

Sponsors are also welcomed to contribute to the event with anything from door prizes to lane sponsorship of $100 or more.
