Marauders win sixth straight game

The Mt. Vernon girls basketball team won its sixth consecutive game on Saturday, 60-42, over rival Pendleton Heights to open Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

The Marauders improved to 7-1 on the season behind a game-high 16 points from Lexi Shelton, who shot 6-of-12 from the field. Olivia Yeley followed with 15 points and Abby Worley had 12. Sydnee Perry had 13 points with four steals and four assists.

Shelton grabbed a team-best eight rebounds to go with four assists and three steals. Yeley had eight rebounds.

The Marauders travel to Anderson tonight with the game set to tip at 7:30 p.m.

Royals win third game in a row

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team built a 21-14 by halftime and never looked back to defeat Hagerstown 41-37 on Saturday.

The Royals (7-2) were paced by Jocelyn Duncan’s 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Grace Stapleton had six assists.

Aly Spaulding finished with nine points, while Stapleton had eight. Chloe O’Neal chipped in seven points.

O’Neal and Skyla Smith both had four rebounds.

The Royals return to the court at home today against North Decatur at 7:30 p.m.

Dragons win big over HHC rival Eagles

The New Palestine girls basketball team scored 22 straight second-half points Saturday to pull away to a 52-29 victory over HHC rival Delta.

The Dragons led 29-26 midway through the third quarter when Jordan Reid’s steal-and-score launched the run. Delta scored just 10 second-half points, with only three coming after the opening three minutes.

Reid led the Dragons with 18 points, including seven in the second half. Isabella Gizzi added 11 points, with eight coming after halftime. Addi Jones added eight points. Michaela Jones scored six, and Anna Ackerman added four points.

The Dragons are now 7-2 after their fourth straight victory, and 2-0 in the HHC. They next play today at home against Shelbyville.

Boys basketball

Royals even out record, beat Wes-Del

The Eastern Hancock boys basketball team pulled back to .500 with a victory over host Wes-Del on Saturday night.

The Royals lost their opener 56-54 at home against Connersville, but they bounced back against Wes-Del with a 31-24 lead by halftime before winning 73-65.

Landon O’Neal poured in 25 points, while Silas Spaulding had 18 on 6-of-8 shooting to get Eastern Hancock back into the win column. Bradyn Smith had 10 points, and Jacob Spaulding added six.

Drew White pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds and Jacob Spaulding dished out four assists. The team shot 13-for-29 from 3-point range with Silas Spaulding burying five along with O’Neal during their Mid-Eastern Conference opener.

The Royals (1-1) host Northeastern next at home on Friday.

Cougars drop tough one to Braves

The Greenfield-Central boys basketball team dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing to Indian Creek 68-51 at home on Saturday.

The Cougars had three players finish in double-figures, but it wasn’t enough despite a team-high 19 points from freshman Dylan Moles.

Gavin Robertson had 10 points and Jake Cochran added 11 points. Moles and Cochran both had five rebounds. Moles added three assists and three steals. Brandy Mundell contributed four rebounds and three assists.

Caleb Mundell posted a team-high eight assists with two rebounds, a steal and three points.

The Cougars travel to New Palestine on Friday to open HHC play at 7:30 p.m.

Tigers slip away

from Marauders

The Mt. Vernon boys basketball team built a 25-19 lead by halftime, but the host Fishers Tigers charged back in the second half to win 60-58.

Fishers outscored Mt. Vernon 41-33 in the second half to rally behind Alex Szilagyi’s team-high 22 points.

The Marauders (1-1) return home tonight as they host Hamilton Heights at 7:30 p.m.

Marauders take

fifth at Westfield

The Mt. Vernon wrestling team improved to 9-1 on the season with a fifth-place showing at the Westfield Duals on Saturday.

The Marauders 4-1 finish secured head coach Chad Masters’ 100th career victory in six years. Chris Wilkerson (145) and Max Hayes (170) both went 5-0 on the day.

Mt. Vernon defeated Fishers 51-24, Carroll (Fort Wayne) 41-31, Yorktown 78-6 and Victory College Prep 84-0. They lost to host Westfield 46-21.

Dragons open with 4-1 mark at Super Duals

The New Palestine wrestling team opened its season Saturday, going 4-1 at the Decatur Central Super Duals.

The Dragons opened the day with a 50-25 victory over Plainfield. They then beat Greenwood 39-33. In the third round, the Dragons dropped a 46-36 decision to Mooresville, before beating Terre Haute North 48-18 and Eastern (Pekin) 62-18 in the final two rounds.

Christian White, Chase Nelson, Max Jones and Zach Hoyt all finished 5-0 on the day for the Dragons. Richard Clevenger and Will Olive both went 4-1.

Cougars finished

6th at HOF Classic

The Greenfield-Central girls swim team tallied 152 points for sixth at the Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday.

The 400 medley relay team placed eighth, and Megan Coffin was sixth in the 200 butterfly and the 200 breaststroke.

Grace Hall was seventh in diving, while the mixed 250 relay team was second.

Marauders finish seventh at invite

The Mt. Vernon girls swim team compiled 97 points to finish seventh at the Pike Invitational on Saturday.

Boys swimming

Cougars take fourth place at HOF Classic

The Greenfield-Central boys swim team recorded 325 points for fourth at the Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday.

Kien Dalton won the diving competition with Jack Mays in fourth. The mixed 250 relay team of Norah Johnson, Anne Marie DeKeyser, Travis Black and Sam Jennings came in second.

Jennings was second in the 500 freestyle, while Black won both the 50 butterfly and the 50 free.

Marauders place second at Pike

The Mt. Vernon boys swim team recorded 324 points for second overall at the Pike Invitational. Franklin Central won the event with 351.5 points.

The Marauders were led by a pool-record time set by Aiden Tierney in the 200 individual medley.
