Marauders improve record

The Mt. Vernon girls basketball team charged back from a 25-20 first-half deficit to prevail over host East Central 54-50 on Saturday.

The Marauders improved their season record to 5-1 and have won four straight games after opening the season 1-1 with a loss at Warren Central on Nov. 9.

Faith Hayes led the Marauders with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting to go with three rebounds and three steals.

Olivia Yeley had a team-high six rebounds and 11 points, while Sydnee Perry added 12 points with five rebounds, two assists and four steals. Tessa Freeman dished out nine assists with four points. Abby Worley had eight points.

The Marauders host Westfield on Wednesday.

Dragons hold strong to win

The New Palestine girls basketball team held Indian Creek without a field goal for the entire fourth quarter, allowing the Dragons to pull away to a 60-54 victory Saturday afternoon at Indian Creek.

The Dragons are now 5-2, having won the first two games of a three-game road swing. They’ll open conference play today at New Castle.

With the game tied 48-48 going into the final period, the Dragons took the lead when Michaela Jones drained a 3-pointer. She and Jordan Reid followed with baskets to give the Dragons a cushion. NP hit 5-of-7 from the line in the final quarter to seal the game, with Grace Marshall going 3-for-4 and Isabella Gizzi 2-for-2.

Reid led all scorers with 17 points. Gizzi tallied five points in the opening frame. Reid added five points.

Jones had 16 points, including two 3-pointers. Gizzi and Marshall scored nine points each. Addi Jones and Faith Hensel tallied four points each. Anna Ackerman also scored a point.

Royals push past Raiders

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team held on down the stretch to defeat the Wapahani Raiders at home 46-44 on Saturday.

The Royals are now 5-2 on the season after having won three of their last four games.

Eastern Hancock led 17-14 at halftime and kept their lead despite being outscored 30-29 in the second half.

Jocelyn Duncan paced the Royals in scoring with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while adding two 3-pointers and four steals.

Grace Stapleton had a team-high seven assists and four rebounds. Emma Bolding and Chloe O’Neal pulled down five rebounds each.

O’Neal had eight points, Stapleton chipped in six and Aly Spaulding had seven points. Bolding finished with six points.

The Royals host Southwestern (Shelbyville) tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Boys Basketball

Royals fall to Bulldogs

The Eastern Hancock boys basketball team ran out to an early first-half lead, but the visiting Centerville Bulldogs charged back to defeat the Royals 56-54 on Wednesday.

The Royals dropped their season opener despite a team-high 25 points from Landon O’Neal and 10 points from Cole Rainbolt.

O’Neal shot 8-of-17 from the field, including 5-of-11 3-pointers along with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the free-throw line. He added a rebound and two assists.

Rainbolt had six rebounds to lead the Royals and four steals. Bradyn Smith grabbed four defensive rebounds with five points, while Zach Arnold had three assists and six points.

Silas Spaulding finished with six points, two assists and a steal. The Royals open Mid-Eastern Conference play on Saturday at Wes-Del.
