New Pal student wins local Distinguished Young Women competition

GREENFIELD — Reina Amones, a New Palestine High School senior, is Hancock County’s Distinguished Young Woman.

Along with winning the competition on Nov. 17 at The Garden Chapel in Greenfield, Amones also came out on top in the program’s categories of fitness, self-expression, interview and spirit. She won a $450 scholarship and moves on to the state Distinguished Young Women competition, which will be held in February in Kokomo.

Emily Barone, also a New Palestine High School senior, was the program’s scholastic winner and won a $100 scholarship. Megan Niederhauser, a senior at Eastern Hancock High School, was the talent winner and first runner-up. She won a $200 scholarship. Ginny Mathis, a Mt. Vernon High School senior, got a $50 scholarship.

Distinguished Young Women of Hancock County is a nonprofit organization and all scholarship funds are donated.

The program is open to high school seniors living in Hancock County, including those who are home-schooled. It is currently accepting applications for the class of 2021 at hancock.in.distinguishedyw.org.
