Cougars hold on to win

The Greenfield-Central girls basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory at home on Tuesday night.

The Cougars grabbed a 21-20 halftime lead and stayed on top late to win 31-29 over visiting Richmond.

The victory pulled the Cougars back to .500 on the season with a 2-2 record.

Senior guard Hannah Farrell led all scorers with 10 points, followed by Ava Antic with nine points. Junior Brooke Herrell added six points, while both Crystal Peterson and Caroline Gibson each finished with three points.

Royals soar past Rockets

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team wasted little time on Tuesday night en route to a lopsided 71-16 win over host Union (Modoc).

The Royals built a 23-2 after the first quarter and led 37-4 by halftime to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Chloe O’Neal and Alivia Coffin-Gutierrez both led the Royals with 13 points. Aly Spaulding had 10 points, and Grace Stapleton added nine points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and eight assists.

Caroline Stapleton chipped in seven points with six rebounds and five assists. Skyla Smith pulled down seven boards for Eastern Hancock.

Girls swimming

Dragons split season opener

The New Palestine girls swim team opened its season Tuesday by splitting a triangular meet at Lawrence Central.

Junior Kayleigh Wright was a double-winner Tuesday. The Dragons beat host Lawrence Central 60-42 and fell to Shelbyville 57-45.

Junior Kayleigh Wright was a double-winner. She won the 100-yard butterfly and also teamed up with Arielle Poynter, Katelyn Trimpe and Bailey Young to win the 200 free relay.

The quartet of Poynter, Trimpe, Wright and Young also finished second in the 400 free relay.

Young had two individual second-place finishes in the 200 free and 500 free. Trimpe was second in the 50 free and 100 butterfly. Poynter was third in the 100 butterfly. Karen Shriver finished second in driving.

Lillie Poag was second in the 100 breaststroke, with Claire Whisler third. Poag was also third in the 200 IM.
