ATHENS, GEORGIA
Carole Short, age 76, of Athens, Ga and formerly of Greenfield, passed away on November 12, 2019. She was born on October 20, 1943, in Indianapolis, IN to the late Arthur & Mildred (McAtee) Thomas.
She cared for others, including her own mother who eventually moved next door, and spent a great deal of time at the swimming pool with her children in summers. After she had grandchildren, she delighted when they would come to visit, especially their longer stays in the summer, and cooking large family dinners for the holidays. She enjoyed reading and gardening throughout most of her life, using her considerable knowledge to freeze and can produce for her family, and was a highly skilled baker, making elaborate cookies and candies for Christmas.
Although shy, she delighted in the camaraderie of the women she worked with at Greenfield Central High School, catching up with the neighbors on Michigan St., and sitting on the front porch in the evening with her husband.
She had a deep and enduring love of animals, beginning with her visits to her grandparents’ farm in southern Indiana, and enjoyed any occasion when she could help bring in the cows and sheep with her grandfather.
Over the years, she deeply loved the dogs who she shared her home with, especially Hunter, and the presence of dogs never failed to provide cheer and comfort. She adored her horse, Cricket, even after she was kicked in the face, and in her years living in Georgia she enjoyed visits to a family friend’s horse farm and listening to the soft cooing of the hens who lived in her back yard. She also enjoyed watching Henri and Sam play tennis, attending UGA gymnastics meets, and watching IU basketball games with her grandsons. We will be forever grateful for the loving care that she received at Magnolia Estates in her last years.
Left to cherish Carole’s memory are her children; Katrina (Richard) Burke, Tiese (Tony) Thomas, Julie (T.J.) Lease, Michele (Fred) Lease-Johnson & Justin Short, 7 grandchildren & 8 great-grandchildren.
Carole is proceeded in death by her parents listed above; husband Robert Lease in 1970 and Richard Short in 2011. She is also proceeded in death by a son, Jason Lease.
Visitation for Carole will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday November 19, 2019 at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 W. Main St, Greenfield, IN 46140. A Funeral Service will be at the funeral home on Wednesday November 20, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. with John Thomas officiating. Burial will immediately follow the Funeral Service at New Palestine Cemetery.
