Why are you the best candidate for office?

Growing up in a small town has given me perspective of how communities like Fortville thrive and survive. Being the owner of Libby’s Ice Cream & Gifts, I hear from residents and visitors daily their views about our town. My work with numerous community organizations gives me the chance to see the impact of decisions being made and how they affect our community. I’m very passionate about the history of Fortville. I want to maintain the integrity of our small town while we continue to improve the infrastructure to solidify the future of Fortville.

What is the most pressing issue facing Fortville?

Development and communication. From Southeastern to State Road 234 Fortville is growing. Not all development affects all residents; but change is alarming, and without a clear understanding residents get upset. In order to maintain the positive momentum, we have to expect growth to help fund our schools, roads, water/wastewater and parks. These are all the things we value in our community. Growth is inevitable, but we need to be able to communicate our plans to the community better.

Does Fortville need smoking rules that are stricter than Hancock County’s?

No. Hancock County already has the strictest smoking ordinance in the state. The ordinance states no smoking in public places. If a business primarily selling tobacco wants to put in a separate room for their patrons to enjoy their product, I don’t have a problem with it. I’m not a smoker and would prefer shop patrons to enjoy their smoke away from the front of storefronts.

Should Fortville pursue a riverfront development district, in which more liquor licenses would be available for restaurants that serve alcohol?

Yes. The Riverfront Development District is a tool to encourage the revitalization of a downtown and its surrounding area. It would help bring dining, entertainment and cultural establishments into Fortville. I’d like to see the empty storefronts filled and improve the downtown experience.
