Dragons, Marauders win HHC titles

PENDLETON — The Mt. Vernon boys and New Palestine girls won the Hoosier Heritage Conference cross-country titles Saturday at Pendleton Heights.

It was the sixth HHC title for the Marauders and their first since 2014. The Dragons girls won for the second straight year, and New Palestine’s Brenna Shaw won the individual title.

In the boys race, Mt. Vernon tallied 46 places to win the title. Pendleton Heights (62) was second and Greenfield-Central (77) finished third. New Palestine was fifth. In the girls race, New Palestine placed four runners in the top 10 to clinch the title with 36 places. Pendleton Heights (58) was second and Yorktown (85) third. Mt. Vernon finished fifth and Greenfield-Central was sixth.

The Mt. Vernon boys were strong up front, with four runners placing in the top nine. Reyce Morgan led the way in fifth place. Austin Rush was seventh, Colin Brown finished eighth and Tyler Strantz came in at ninth.

Conner Kinnaman of Greenfield-Central was runner-up in the boys race to champion Matthew Mitsch of Yorktown. New Palestine placed one runner in the top 10, with Devon Whitaker finishing sixth.

In the girls race, New Palestine’s Shaw won with a 19:04.97, 11.12 seconds ahead of runner-up Audrey Brinkruff of Greenfield-Central.

New Palestine had three other top 10 finishers — Emma Mann was fourth, Kaylin Casner seventh and Kendall Mann 10th — leading it to the title.

Royals compete in MEC meet

A pair of top-three finishes helped the Eastern Hancock boys finish third in the Mid-Eastern Conference meet on Saturday. Nick Edwards finished second for the Royals, with teammate Daniel Campbell right behind in third place.

Wapahani won the boys race with a 48, narrowly edging Monroe Central’s 52. The Royals finished with 90.

In the girls race, Ashton Willis finished sixth for the Royals. She was the only Eastern Hancock runner to compete.

All four county schools will compete in the 14-team Mt. Vernon Sectional, hosted Saturday at 10 a.m.
