GREENFIELD — A Greenfield woman who was struck by a vehicle last week on the north side of Greenfield has died from her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle that struck her has been charged with drunken driving and causing catastrophic injury. A police report indicates the man’s blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Kathy Davis, 71, Greenfield, died late Wednesday afternoon after being taken off life support, the Greenfield Police Department said. She had been airlifted from Hancock Regional Hospital to St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital, where she had been listed in critical condition ever since the Sept. 26 incident.

Jeremy Thompson, 39, Greenfield, the driver of the car, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.184, according to a portable breath test administered later at the Hancock County Jail, a probable cause affidavit said. A blood-alcohol content of 0.08 is considered evidence of impairment. Further toxicology tests are pending, said Matt Holland, deputy chief of the Greenfield Police Department.

Thompson has been charged with a Level 4 felony count of causing catastrophic injury when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, but another Level 4 felony count of causing death when operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated is expected to be added, deputy prosecutor Kevin Kelly said. Kelly is handling the case for the county and is expected to file the new charge in the coming days, he said.

Thompson posted a $4,000 cash bond and was released from the Hancock County Jail on Saturday, records show. He’s scheduled to be in court again for a pretrial conference Nov. 20.

According to court records, Davis was struck near the intersection of East McKenzie Road and North Brandywine Street. Reports suggested she was trying to cross McKenzie Road at the time, about 8 p.m. First-responders found her in the grass on the south side of McKenzie Road.

Davis suffered multiple critical injuries, including head trauma, her family told police.

Thompson, who was uninjured in the crash, was driving a 2008 Pontiac G6 sedan and told police the victim apparently walked into the street. He stated he did not see her and that it was dark.

Thompson originally told police that he had not been drinking but later admitted to consuming alcohol earlier.

The victim’s husband told police he was going to meet his wife at the intersection to drive her the rest of the way home, the affidavit said.

A witness to the accident said she was traveling directly behind the vehicle that hit Davis, going east on McKenzie Road when she saw the car in front of her hit something, the affidavit said. The witness told police she saw an object fly in the area and land on the south side of the roadway, the affidavit said. The witness then realized she’d seen a person struck and instructed her daughter to call 911.
