Bicyclist killed after being hit by impaired driver

Officials with the McCordsville Police Department are investigating an early morning shooting.

HANCOCK COUNTY – The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal bicycle accident near the entrance of Heartland Resort, 1613 W. County Road 300N.

The accident, involving a motorist, happened about 10:50 a.m. Wednesday morning, said Maj. Robert Campbell, chief deputy of the sheriff’s department. The driver of the vehicle that struck the bicyclist has been arrested and booked into the Hancock County Jail.

The bicyclist, Rodger Wellenreiter, 76 of Greenfield, was fatally injured in the collision and pronounced deceased at the scene.  The driver of the motor vehicle is Robert Terry, 40, of Greenfield. Terry was not injured in
the collision. Terry has been arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated-causing death a Level 4 felony and driving while suspended-causing death a Level 5 felony.
