Boys soccer

Dragons fall in opener

New Palestine dropped its opener Thursday, falling at home to Yorktown, 3-1.

After falling behind 1-0, the Dragons tied the game in the first half when Jon Moore scored off Owen Heffelmire’s corner kick. Yorktown responded with a goal to re-take the lead, then added a second-half penalty kick.

The Dragons are next in action at 10 a.m. today against Warren Central.

Marauders drop road match

Mt. Vernon traveled to Warren Central on Thursday but came up short, falling 2-1.

Sam Robert Eze tied the game partway through the first half and momentum was turning. The half ended in a 1-1 tie, but midway through the second half, Warren Central struck again with a ball behind the defense and took the lead for good. Noah Whitehouse had 13 saves in the loss.

The Marauders are home today to open Conference play against New Castle.

Girls soccer

Cougars pick up road win

Greenfield-Central picked up its second win in two tries this season, topping host University High on Thursday, 2-1.

The Cougars possessed the ball well for the first eight minutes of the game, leading to a goal from 25 yards out to the back post by senior Anne Marie DeKeyser. After University tied the game in the second half, a pass from DeKeyser to sophomore Kelsi McLaughlin led to the winning goal.

The Cougars move to 2-0 on the season and travel to Mt. Vernon on Monday for their opening conference game of the season.

Volleyball

Dragons get road sweep

New Palestine posted its second straight road sweep Thursday, beating host Guerin Catholic 25-21, 25-22, 25-22.

Sarah Adam had a double-double with 26 assists, 13 digs, two aces and three blocks. Kaelyn Armstrong also had a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Grace Myers added 25 digs, while Jesi Hall had 10 kills.

The Dragons are next in action Wednesday at Hamilton Heights.

Royals fall in hard-fought match

Eastern Hancock dropped its third straight match to open the season, falling to Cambridge City Lincoln on Thursday, 25-12, 30-28, 26-24.

The Royals are next in action today at the Shenandoah Invitational.

Dragons win HHC match

New Palestine won its first Hoosier Heritage Conference contest Thursday, beating Yorktown, 4-1.

Ben Blachly led the Dragons with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles. The Dragons also swept the doubles, with Jeremy Wagoner/Ethan Haeberle winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Ezra Schwier/Clayton Wesley winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. At No. 2 singles, Colin Darley won a marathon three-hour match 7-6, 3-6, 7-6(3) to clinch the fourth point for the Dragons.

The Dragons are next in action Monday at Delta in another HHC contest.

Cougars fall to Lawrence Central

Greenfield-Central fell in a close match Thursday night to Lawrence Central, 3-2.

Corbin Tilley and Nick Grandstaff won at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-2, and Lawrence Central won the other doubles spot. The Cougars got their other point at No. 2 singles, where Robbie Dye made a great comeback in the third set to win 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.

The Cougars play Rushville at home on Monday.

Marauders get narrow win

Mt. Vernon was on the road again Thursday, this time topping host Franklin Central, 3-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Jackson Dunlavy and Dallas Turner got off the court first with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Chris Hays followed at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

After Franklin Central won at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles, the match came down to the top singles spot. Haiden Rose picked up a three-set win, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 to secure the win.

Mt. Vernon competes today at Ball State in the eight-team Muncie Burris Invite.

Girls golf

Royals keep rolling

Eastern Hancock kept up its winning ways on Thursday, topping Southwestern, 207-227.

Jocelyn Duncan was medalist with a 46. Shelby Jackson had a 50 and Daly Pelger had a 54. Haleigh Caveletto shot a 57, Inez Friddle a 67 and Hunter Orr rounded things out with a 69.

The Royals play Monday against Knightstown and Shenandoah.

Dragons top Southport

Seniors Annaliese Fox and Izzy Gray led New Palestine to a 176-205 victory over Southport in a match Thursday at The Links.

Fox shot 35 to win match medalist honors. Gray added a 41. Michaela Purnell shot 49. Megan Diller and Abby Belgin each shot 51s.

The Dragons are next in action today, hosting the New Palestine Invitational at 1 p.m. at The Links.
