Marauders ranked No. 10 in state

In the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association preseason poll, released Friday, Mt. Vernon received one first-place vote and is ranked No. 10 in the state in Class 4A.

The Marauders are one of three teams from both Class 4A Sectional 9 and the Hoosier Heritage Conference ranked in the Top 10.

New Castle, which moved up to Class 4A after winning the 3A title last year, is ranked No. 1 and Yorktown, the defending Class 4A champion, is ranked No. 4.

New Palestine is among the teams just outside the Top 10 receiving votes.

Mt. Vernon opens the season today with a 10 a.m. (junior varsity start time) home contest against Greenwood. The Marauders host Cathedral, also receiving votes, Monday, in a contest billed as “Pack The House” Night. Monday’s action starts at 6 p.m. with a junior varsity match preceding the varsity contest.

New Palestine opens its season today with a 10 a.m. match against Scecina.

Marauders top Royals; Duncan sets record

In a county clash, Mt. Vernon topped Eastern Hancock on Thursday, 185-200, despite a school-record performance from the Royals.

Mt. Vernon’s Meredith Johnson was medalist, carding a 40. Alaina Nugent followed with a 41, Mackenzie Miner had a 47, Emily Rollo a 57 and Haidyn Cauldwell a 64.

Eastern Hancock’s Jocelyn Duncan set a nine-hole school record with a 41. Haliegh Caveletto and Shelby Jackson each shot a 52, Daly Pelger had a 55, Inez Freddie had a 70 and Hunter Orr had a 71.

Dragons fall on road against Noblesville

The New Palestine golf team dropped a 173-205 decision Thursday to Noblesville at Bear Slide.

Izzy Gray led the Dragons with a 46. Rachel Purnell shot 51, Megan Diller had a 53 and Abby Belgin finished with a 55.
