MT. COMFORT — Students and faculty at Mt. Comfort Elementary School will have a new leader when classes resume in a few weeks.

Alissa Lockwood started her role as principal on July 1. She was assistant principal at McCordsville Elementary School for the past three years.

During her first year in McCordsville, she helped raise the school’s letter grade from the Indiana Department of Education from a D to an A. The DOE recently named McCordsville Elementary a Four Star School.

Lockwood said in a news release that she’s honored to lead Mt. Comfort Elementary School.

“I believe in fostering a high level of learning for all students, and supporting our staff while we create that environment is a priority,” she said. “My dedication to Mt. Comfort Elementary and commitment to strive for excellence will hopefully have a positive impact on every student and staff member, and the parents as well.”

She added she’s looking forward to getting to know Mt. Comfort’s students, staff and families and continuing the school’s success.

The news release states that Lockwood’s “interpersonal relationship skills and experience in building a dynamic and team-oriented culture were a leading factor in her selection.”

Before becoming assistant principal at McCordsville Elementary School, Lockwood was the Title I Coordinator at Fortville Elementary School from 2012 to 2016. Title I is a federal program that distributes funds to schools with students from low-income families.

Lockwood started her education career in 2005 teaching first and second grade in Fortville.

“Her accomplishments in each position demonstrate she is a data-driven decision maker with experience cultivating a high-functioning team environment,” according to the news release.

Lockwood has Master of Education degrees in Educational Administration and Supervision as well as an All Grade Reading Specialist License in Elementary Education, all from Ball State University. She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 2004 from Purdue University.

Jack Parker, Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation superintendent, said that Lockwood is well-versed in building strong leadership teams and is driven to create successful school environments focusing “on the whole child.”

“She is a proven instructional leader with exceptional communication skills and is poised for this next leadership position,” Parker said. “I have full confidence in her ability to continue to grow Mt. Comfort Elementary’s achievements.”

Lockwood succeeds Casey Dodd, who became principal of Mt. Vernon High School after Greg Roach stepped down to take a position in a different school district.
