HANCOCK COUNTY — One of the biggest chapters of their lives is officially closed. After 12 years of school, Hancock County seniors started saying good-bye to their high school careers on Friday evening.

Nearly 600 seniors at Mt. Vernon High School and New Palestine High School walked onto the stage to pick up their diplomas and then crossed into the next phase of their lives. Some of the students will head off to college, while others will jump right into the work force, including serving their country.

The motto for NPHS seniors was “Don’t count the days, make the days count.” This year’s graduating class had two valedictorians, Cameron Rooks and Evan Shaw. Kyrstin Kauchak was the salutatorian.

At Mt. Vernon, the valedictorian was Keian Gatewood. The salutatorian was Dylan Cole. The class motto is from Nelson Mandela, who said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
