GREENFIELD — The first “Why We Walk” event to help bring awareness to sexual assault and its victims attracted more than 50 participants whose message was one of hope and resilience for those who have suffered sexual violence and their loved ones.

Tina Walker, Greenfield, put the event together. She is the relative of a teenage girl who was the victim of an unwanted sexual encounter. Walker organized the walk to support her relative and others who have been victims of sexual assault and need a positive way to fight back.

Walker thinks the justice system often protects the perpetrator and not the victim and wants to do all she can to bring awareness and one day help change laws. She also talked with the group about her hopes of adding verbiage to state law that will clearly outline the definition of sexual consent.
