GREENFIELD — A teenager has been arrested and charged in several area burglaries, Greenfield Police Department officials say.

The 17-year-old Greenfield boy was arrested Tuesday in connection with burglaries at residences in the Copeland Farms subdivision and on Spring Street; and at Greenfield Central Junior High School, Greenfield police said.

Police know of at least two homes being broken into in those areas on multiple occasions, but detectives believe there are others they don’t yet know about.

“He has admitted to the crimes,” said GPD Detective Randy Ratliff. “His charges are pending, but the juvenile charges will be different than adult charges.”

Police know the break-ins occurred in the past couple of weeks, but others might have happened over a longer period of time, officials said.

The teen, who is a Greenfield-Central High School student, is accused of breaking into the press box at Greenfield Central Junior High School last week, where he took several items that have yet to be recovered. Police did not describe those items.

Officers located property from the residential burglaries at the suspect’s residence. In addition to the property from the known burglaries, officers also recovered women’s clothing that is believed to be from unreported burglaries in the same neighborhoods.

The teen was taken to the juvenile detention center in Delaware County, where juvenile defendants from Hancock County typically go after their arrests.

Police are asking anyone who believes they have been the victim of one of these burglaries to contact Nichole Gilbert, detective of the Greenfield Police Department, at 317-325-1286.
