Athletes earn academic all-state

Three Hancock County athletes were honored by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association this week as they announced the Academic All-State and honorable mention recipients.

New Palestine senior Leah Seib was the lone county representative on the Academic All-State team. Dragons senior Matthew True earned honorable mention, as did Mt. Vernon senior Cade Gentry.

Track and field

Royals open season with a pair of wins

Eastern Hancock kicked off the track season with a pair of wins against Richmond.

The boys, 91.5 to 31.5 winners, got victories in multiple events, including three relays. The 4 x 800 relay of Daniel Campbell, Nick Edwards, Cayden Sotelo and Skyler Schrope picked up a win, as did the 4 x 100 team of Zach Arnold, Skyler Sexton, Cole Rainbolt and Blayze Sarber. The 4 x 400 team of Schrope, Rainbolt, Sarber and Sexton also earned a win.

Skyler Sexton won the 110 and 300 hurdles. Schrope won the 800 and 1,600 meters. Edwards won the 3,200 meter, Rainbolt won the long jump, Nik Uhler won the high jump and Gabe Lawler won the shot put.

The Royals girls were led by two big scorers in their win, with Aly Spaulding earning 16 points and Lainey Effing adding 13.
