New Palestine moves pancake breakfast

The New Palestine Baseball Backers have rescheduled the pancake breakfast originally planned for Saturday morning to Sunday at 8 a.m. to allow fans to go to the boys basketball regional in Southport.

The breakfast is set from 8 a.m. to noon at the New Palestine Lions Club. Free donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to supporting the New Palestine baseball program.

County players honored by conference

The 2018-19 All-Hoosier Heritage Conference boys basketball team was announced this week, and five Hancock County players were featured on the team.

The 13-player team features players from six of the eight HHC schools. Ten of the 13 are seniors.

HHC runner-up and sectional champion New Palestine is represented by three players. Junior Maximus Gizzi led the conference with 4.6 assists per game and was fifth in scoring at 16.3 ppg. Senior Matthew True tallied 15.9 ppg in the regular season and led the league with a 45.1 percent 3-point average. Junior Dawson Eastes also represented the Dragons. He was fifth in the HHC at 6.6 rebounds per game.

Mt. Vernon, which finished third in the league, had two representatives, led by Peyton Meadors, the conference’s fourth-leading scorer (17.1 ppg) and leading free throw shooter (90 percent). Cade Gentry also represented the Marauders after averaging 11.5 points per game.

Former Dragon qualifies for championships

New Palestine graduate Courtnee Coffman is one of five members of the Franklin women’s swimming and diving team are headed to the NCAA Division III National Championships in a few weeks.

Coffman, a sophomore, and her teammates will compete against the nation’s best when the national championships take place from March 20 to 23 in Greensboro, N.C. The quintet qualified for eight individual races and five relays, and will represent the program in 13 different events.

Coffman hit qualifying marks in a pair of sprint events. The New Palestine native hit national times in both the 50 freestyle (23.72) and the 100 freestyle (51.60). She will also compete on multiple relay teams.

The sophomore has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference swimmer of the week twice this year. As a sophomore, she is also a two-time all-HCAC Conference 1st Team member. She has broken one individual record and has been part of a team that has broken three relay records at Franklin.

Eastern Hancock sets 3 on 3 tourney

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters annual 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will be conducted March 16 at Eastern Hancock High School.

The tournament has many different divisions, from first grade through open divisions for adults, for both male and female players. There is also B division for high school boys that do not play on a JV or Varsity basketball team.

The entry fee is $60 for early registration. The entry fee increases to $80 after March 11. Online registration will be available at easternhancock3on3.eventbrite.com.
