Teddy Ray Shively, 85, died Friday evening, January 18, 2019 at Bayfront Hospital, Port Charlotte from complications of a heart attack. He was born at home on July 20, 1933 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ted grew up in Indianapolis and as a child played in nearby Garfield Park. He attended Arsenal Tech High School and graduated in 1951. He answered the call of duty during the Korean War and enlisted in the United States Navy on March 17, 1952 and was honorably discharged on March 15, 1956. He was a proud combat veteran who served

at Pearl Harbor and Japan on the destroyer tender U.S.S. Piedmont (AD-17) and the destroyer escort U.S.S. Silverstein (DE-534), rated as a 2nd Class Damage Control sailor.

Ted was a lifelong member of the American Legion.

In 1958, Ted married the former Jane Kiger of Greenfield, Indiana. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March of 2018. They had two children; Beth and Scot.

He retired as the Supervisor of Mechanical Services from Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company in Greenfield, Indiana after 32 years and 9 months of service (1957 – 1989).

Ted was a selfless volunteer in his community. He was a volunteer fireman for 27 years in the Greenfield (Indiana) Fire Department (1961 – 1988) and a 4-H Leader for 5 years.

In 1995 he and his wife volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. Ted served on the Manatee County Board of Directors for 6 years and Head of Construction for 5 years.

During his service to Habitat he worked on building 100 houses. Throughout his life Ted was good with his hands, creating artwork from found materials.

Ted and his wife moved from Palmetto, Florida to Punta Gorda in March 2011.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Beth (2016). He is survived by his wife Jane Shively, son Scot Shively, daughter-in-law Jill Shively and granddaughter Anne Shively, all of Punta Gorda, Florida and grandson Joseph Shively of Jacksonville, Florida. His cremains will be interred at Mansion Memorial Park Cemetery in Ellenton, Florida.

He enjoyed walking, watching movies and kayaking. He loved playing tennis in Gilchrist Park where he played until he was nearly 84 years old.

Ted enjoyed a full and active life. He was a loving and thoughtful husband, a caring and fun-loving father and grandfather, and a true friend. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
