County’s jobless rate still under 3 percent

HANCOCK COUNTY — More Hancock County residents are unemployed compared to last year, but the pool of workers also increased by more than 1,000 between December 2017 and last month.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated a 2.9 percent unemployment rate in Hancock County for December 2018. That’s a few percentage points higher than last year’s rate of 2.6 percent. The county is ranked as having the 67th lowest unemployment rate among Indiana’s 92 counties

Hancock County’s workforce grew from 38,337 to 39,603, year-over-year. Just 1,135 of those county residents who are actively looking for work don’t have job, according to estimates.

Compared to the region, Hancock’s jobless rate was lower than Madison, Marion, Henry and Rush counties.

The state’s unemployment rate last month was 3.4 percent.
