NEW PALESTINE — Southern Hancock schools wants to hear from residents who live in the district as it begins discussion about whether to build a new high school or make major improvements to the existing one.

The Southern Hancock School Board recently agreed to allow Superintendent Lisa Lantrip to create a New Palestine High School construction team.

The group will advise the board and administrators on options for future projects at the high school.

It will be well-rounded, with financial advisers, contractors and architects. The group will compile information about how prospective projects could be funded and what projects would look like based on various funding options.

The district also soon will seek community input about remodeling the high school or possibly building a new one.

District leaders plan to share more information on how community voices can be heard in the weeks to come, district spokesman Wes Anderson said.

Community feedback will be considered before any decisions are made about expansion, Anderson said.

“It is a top priority for the board and administration to consider student and staff safety during this project while also balancing a fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers,” he said.
