Girls basketball

Royals get home win

Eastern Hancock hosted Hagerstown on Saturday, picking up a 51-34 non-conference victory to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Jocelyn Duncan and Haley Best led the Royals with 13 points each. Jenna Smith added eight points, 13 rebounds and four steals in the win.

Marauders get big win

Mt. Vernon picked up a big conference win Saturday, taking down Pendleton Heights on the road, 48-35, to improve to 8-1 on the year.

The Marauders were led by Lexi Shelton, who topped all scorers with 14 points.

Dragons drop Delta

New Palestine won its fourth straight game Saturday, beating host Delta 75-26. The Dragons improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

Leah Seib led the way for the Dragons with 18 points. Jordan Reid added 17.

Boys basketball

Marauders top Fishers

Mt. Vernon improved to 2-1 on the season Saturday with a 59-50 home win against visiting Fishers.

The Marauders had three scorers in double figures, with Peyton Meadors leading the way with 17 points. Brandon Bell had 13 and Cade Gentry added 10. Meadors and Gentry each added six rebounds in the win.

Cougars fall to Falcons

Greenfield-Central fell behind early and couldn’t complete a comeback Saturday, falling to Perry Meridian 55-45. The Cougars are 0-2 on the season.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Jacob Cochran with 14 points and Brady Mundell with 12. Caleb McIntire and Gavin Robertson each added eight points.

Royals edge past Warriors

Eastern Hancock picked up a narrow victory Saturday, topping Wes-Del 39-38 in a home conference game. The Royals are 2-1 on the year with the win.

The hosts were led by Landon O’Neal’s 10 points. Brady Stephens and Peyton Gray each had eight. Stephens led the way with 11 rebounds.

Swimming

Marauders 5th at invite

Both the Mt. Vernon and Eastern Hancock swims teams competed at the Pike Invitational on Saturday, with the Marauders finishing fifth on both the boys and girls sides and the Royals finishing ninth in both.

The Marauders had several top-three finishers on the day. On the boys side, they were Aiden Tierney, who finished second in the 200 Yard IM and 100 Yard Breaststroke, and the 200 Yard Free Relay team of Evan Flick, Joseph Shepard, Caleb Strege and Logan Schomaker, which finished third. On the girls side, Halle Strege picked up a third-place diving finish.

Cougars compete in Classic

Greenfield-Central’s swim teams competed in Saturday’s Hall of Fame Classic hosted by Franklin Community, with the boys placing seventh and the girls eighth in the event.

On the boys side, the Cougars got top-three finishes from Travis Black, who finished second in the 50 Fly and third in the 50 Free, and Sam Jennings, who finished third in the 1,000 Free.

For the Cougars girls, Carley Logan was the top finisher, earning seventh place in the 200 Free and eighth in the 1,000 Free.

Wrestling

Marauders finish fifth

Mt. Vernon had a big day at Westfield on Saturday, finishing 4-1 on the day and topping three ranked teams in the tournament to earn a fifth-place position.

The Marauders only loss was to No. 7 Roncalli. They topped Class 2A No. 6 Yorktown 51-21, beat Class A No. 2 Shenandoah 55-24, topped host Westfield 37-30 and beat No. 20 Zionsville 54-22.

Mt. Vernon is now 9-1 on the season.

Dragons start season

New Palestine opened its season with a 3-2 record at Saturday’s Decatur Central Super 8 Duals.

The Dragons opened the day with a 45-25 loss to Plainfield. New Palestine then won its next three matches, beating Greensburg 60-15, Terre Haute North 56-18 and Mooresville 38-33. In the final round, the Dragons fell to Greenwood 48-30.

Zach Hoyt went 5-0 for the day to lead the Dragons. Several wrestlers went 4-1 — Christian White, John Dowden, Chase Nelson, Noah Wright, Brayden Clevenger and Colin Jones.

Royals finish 2nd at invite

Eastern Hancock finished second at Saturday’s Lincoln Invitational, hosted by Cambridge City Lincoln.

Royals wrestler Alexander Burton was champion of the 220-pound division.
