NEW PALESTINE — Everyone in the community is invited to attend New Palestine United Methodist Church for “God With Us,” a four-week series based on the Advent themes of Hope, Love, Joy and Peace.

The series takes place at 9:15 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. on Dec. 2, 9, 16 and 23.

“A remarkable thing happened that first Christmas, just as Isaiah had prophesied 700 years earlier — Jesus was born as Immanuel — which means ‘God with us!’” the church wrote in a release. “New Palestine United Methodist Church believes Christmas can still truly give us a taste of the most wonderful time of world history…

“In a season often marked by frenzied busyness, Advent is an opportunity to set aside time to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. The relevant messages in this series are designed to help us place our focus on the greatest gift ever given — and to experience his presence in our lives today.”

The sessions include doughnuts and coffee, lighting of the Advent wreath, and a free God With Us devotional book for visitors.

The church is located at 3565 S. County Road 500W in New Palestine.

Walk through Bethlehem in Oaklandon

OAKLANDON — Go back in time to that first Christmas. Walk Thru Bethlehem is set for Dec. 1 at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, 7650 Oaklandon Road, Indianapolis.

This interactive celebration with 85+ characters in costume will bring joy to people of all ages.

Gather close while shepherds surrounded by live sheep describe the miracle they witnessed. Register for the tax census but stay clear of testy Roman soldiers. Linger as an old Bedouin tells stories of the Patriarchs. Marvel as Magi interpret the stars.

Dance the Hora! Play dreidel, a game much the same as one Jesus might have played. Join a family celebrating Hanukkah. Enter the synagogue and hear a Rabbi explain how Old Testament scripture prophesies the coming of a Messiah. In the cave, receive Mary and Joseph’s stunning revelation. Immanuel. God with us.

After your guided tour, stroll the marketplace, shop for original Fair Trade gifts. Coffee is free at the café with authentic Middle Eastern savories and pastries available for purchase.

With the exception of live sheep, this is an indoor experience.

Although hosted by and located at Servants of Christ, people from several congregations — including Messianic Jew and Orthodox — are involved in creating the event.
