Dragons cruise to opening win

New Palestine posted a shutout quarter and had a strong defensive effort in a season-opening 71-17 victory against Connersville at the Spartan Bowl on Thursday night.

The Dragons jumped out to a 13-2 lead after a quarter and extended the edge to 35-9 at the half. New Palestine then outscored the host Spartans 20-0 in the third quarter.

Jordan Reid had a big return to the court for the Dragons after missing last season with an ACL tear. The junior had 17 points as well as three assists, five steals, a blocked shot and five boards. 

Katie Herron had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Dragons, hitting 8-of-9 from the floor. Michaela Jones and Leah Seib added eight points each. Seib also had seven rebounds. Claire Cherry had six points, three rebounds and two assists. Megan Jolly had six points, two assists, three rebounds and four steals. Haley Harrison added five points and two assists. Tatum Biddle and Addi Jones had two points each.

The Dragons shot 42 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the foul line, hitting 16-of-20.

New Palestine is next in action Wednesday at home against Greenwood.
