GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Council on Wednesday approved to raise the county’s local income tax rate from 1.7 percent to 1.74 percent.

The income tax increase will bring in enough money to cover the Hancock County 911 Center’s operational budget of nearly $700,000. The county collects local income tax from residents’ paychecks.

The 911 center has been operating on excess funds this year due to neither the city nor county funding the dispatch center’s expenses.

John Jokantas, director of Hancock County 911, said the center needs $125,000 to keep running from Oct. 1 until Dec. 31. Council members voted to appropriate the full amount on Wednesday from the county’s food and beverage fund.
