“Memento Park,” by Mark Sarvas

[sc:text-divider text-divider-title=”Story continues below gallery” ]

After an unexpected call, Matt Santos becomes aware of a painting that he believes was looted from his family in Hungary during the second World War. To recover the painting, he must repair his strained relationship with his harshly judgmental father, uncover his family history and restore his connection to his own Jewish faith. Along the way to illuminating the mysteries of his past, Matt is torn between his doting girlfriend, Tracy, and his alluring attorney, Rachel, with whom he travels to Budapest to unearth the truth about the painting and, in turn, his family. As his journey progresses, Matt’s thoughts are consumed with imaginative meditations both on the painting — “Budapest Street Scene” — and the painter — Ervin Kálmán — at the center of his personal drama. Matt’s narrative is as much about family history and father-son dynamics as it is about the nature of art itself.

“Have Dog Will Travel,” by Steven Kuusisto

Stephen Kuusisto was born legally blind, but raised in the 1950s, he was taught to deny his blindness in order to “pass” as sighted. Stephen attended public school, rode a bike and read books pressed right up against his nose. As an adult, he coped with his limited vision by becoming a professor in a small college town, memorizing routes for all of the places he needed to be. Then, at the age of 38, he was laid off. With no other job opportunities in his vicinity, he would have to travel to find work. This is how he found himself at Guiding Eyes paired with a Labrador named Corky. In this vivid and lyrical memoir, Stephen Kuusisto recounts how an incredible partnership with a guide dog changed his life and the adventure that began for him in midlife. In a love letter to guide dogs everywhere, Kuusisto shares the story of how a guide dog changed his life and helped him discover a newfound appreciation for travel and independence.
