NEW PALESTINE — Under a smoldering spring sky, the dedication ceremony of the Southern Hancock County Veterans Memorial was memorable, particularly to the local veterans who worked years to see the site come to fruition.

The festival-type event, conducted May 12 at Sugar Creek Township Park, had a little bit of something for everyone, including food and play areas for children.

The dedication ceremony was put together by officers from New Palestine American Legion Post 182.

The event included a moving performance by the New Palestine High School band.

It played Grammy Award-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre’s debut of his new version of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

There were musical tributes to all branches of the military and the presentation of the colors by the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.

The memorial includes six memorial benches and granite tablets representing the six branches of the U.S. military — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines.
