Marauders win on walk-off

Mt. Vernon won a thriller Monday against Guerin Catholic behind strong pitching from Hunter Davis and clutch hitting by Dino Tharp, winning 2-1.

Davis threw a complete game in only 85 pitches. He struck out four and allowed three hits.

Mt. Vernon got one hit apiece from Jaden Cappelletti, Dylan Cole, Thomas Obergfell, Sam McCarty and Jackson Dunlavy, but the biggest came from Tharp. With two on and two out in the seventh inning, Tharp laced a ball into the left-center gap to plate Max Newlin (who was pinch running for Capp after getting his team leading sixth hit-by-pitch) and Obergfell to win the game.

Softball

Mt. Vernon earns victory

Mt. Vernon won its fifth-straight game Monday, defeating Noblesville 15-8.

The Marauders were led by seniors Jadan Fithian and Kaitlyn Nugent. Fithian was 3 for 4 on the night with a double, three RBIs and defensively had eight putouts. Nugent also was 3 for 4 on the night with a double and RBI.

Nugent also pitched a complete game. The Marauders have won nine of their last 10 games.

Royals get shutout

Eastern Hancock jumped out to an early lead and scored in each of the first four innings, rolling to a run-rule win Monday against Heritage Christian, 12-0.

The Royals finished with five hits but walked seven times. Jessi Potts and Paige Wickard led the way with two RBIs each. Hannah Lewis had no official at-bats, walking all three times she came to the plate and scoring twice.

Potts had a strong day on the mound, striking out eight, walking two, and allowing just three hits in five innings of work.

Tennis

Marauders blank Frankton

The Mt. Vernon tennis team rolled past Frankton on Monday, winning 5-0 and losing no games in the match.

Picking up the 6-0, 6-0 wins for the 9-2 Marauders were Alaina Nelson at No. 1 singles, Lydia Ruegsegger at No. 2 singles, Kaleigh Helm at No. 3 singles, the No. 1 doubles team of Olivia Spicer and Sophie Williams, and the No. 2 doubles team of Maeve Laughlin and Alexis Lane.

Royals cruise to win

Eastern Hancock picked up their first win of the season Monday, getting past Knightstown 4-1.

Winning for the Royals were Cassandra Hannemann at No. 2 singles, Valentina Brooks at No. 3 singles, the No. 1 doubles team of Kayla Huff and Madison Hagan, and the No. 2 doubles team of Corina Jennings and Chloe McCarty.

The only loss for Eastern Hancock was at No. 2 singles, where Chelsi McMahan lost a three-set match, 6-1 5-7 6-4.

Cougars fall on road

Greenfield-Central lost to Richmond on Monday 5-0.

Richmond was able to take the lead in three of the five varsity positions en route to the win. The closest match of the night for the Cougars was at No. 3 singles. Grace Hall was down 5-6 before she forced a tiebreaker and came back to win the first set.

Then after an 0-6 run in the second set, Hall was again able to adjust her game and put pressure back on her opponent. This time though, Hall would find herself down 4-5 and unable to pull off a second comeback.

Golf

Marauders top Dragons

In a preview of Tuesday’s county meet, the Mt. Vernon Marauders topped New Palestine 170-177 at Hawks Tail in Greenfield on Monday.

Xavier Dunham carded a round of 39 to earn medalist honors. Sam McWilliams shot 41, John Husar 44 and Haiden Rose added 46 for the Marauders.

Josh Shinkle led the Dragons with a 42. Quinn Dobbins shot a 44, Austin Terry a 45, and four players each shot 46 — Elijah Domogala, Chris Guhl, Nic Mohr and Matt Kelley.
