To the editor:

After attending the recent sheriff debate for Hancock County, I feel compelled to share something that is very unsettling to me. The question to the candidates was regarding possibly arming teachers to help protect our children in schools. One candidate made the statement that I quote:  “Can we afford to put non-trained people inside a facility, like veterans … I’m not against arming teachers and having law enforcement in there, but I’m not sure about civilians.”

As a retired Army veteran, I can assure you that in my 32 years, I received many hours of continuous training in the safe and proper use of firearms to not only protect our American freedoms, but to feel well-qualified to assist in the protection of our children in schools! It seems to me we need to all work together for the safety and security of our community! My choice for sheriff is a person who values our children enough to utilize common-sense resources.
