GREENFIELD — The local Elks Lodge reached its goal of raising $1,500 for local Special Olympians, and all they had to do was go Dumpster diving.

The inaugural Arctic Dumpster Dive, hosted by Elks Lodge No. 1720, aimed to raise the funds to help Special Olympics Hancock County with the expenses of attending regional and state competitions.

The uncomfortable experience was all for the county’s Special Olympians, who participate in basketball, track and field and other sports throughout the year. It costs some $200 per athlete to travel to the summer games in Terre Haute, said Jaimi Smith, assistant coordinator for Special Olympics Hancock County. Every year, the group takes a group of about 100 athletes, coaches and volunteers to the competition at Indiana State University in the second week of June.
