FORTVILLE — The Mt. Vernon High School Asia Club recently hosted a Chinese New Year celebration. Several students from the Mandarin I language class entertained the audience with a variety of experiences that included an opera performance from two international Beijing opera singers.

The students performed the traditional lion dance to bring good luck in the new year. Members from the Asia Club performed a song called “Gong Xi, Gong Xi” that many people in China and Taiwan sing for the Chinese New Year. Gong xi translates as congratulations, the traditional Chinese New Year greeting.

The Mandarin II language class presented a lesson on the Chinese zodiac for the celebration. Each year, one of 12 different animals from the zodiac represents the year. This year, 2018, is the year of the dog.
