Dragons, Marauders to play at Victory Field

The New Palestine and Mt. Vernon baseball teams will compete at the 2016 Victory Field Classic on April 22.

The Marauders will open the annual event in downtown Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m. when they face Class 4A Decatur Central. The Dragons will play 3A Guerin Catholic in the finale at approximately 8 p.m.

Class 3A New Palestine finished the 2014-15 season 21-12 and a regional finalist for the fourth time in six years, losing to West Vigo 8-3 in the regional championship. The Dragons are 2-0 in 2016 after beating Martinsville 7-5 and Batesville 12-1 in five innings last week.

Class 4A Mt. Vernon was 15-13 last season, falling to eventual Sectional 9 champion Pendleton Heights in the first round last May. They opened the 2016 season last week on April 5 with a 5-1 victory against Southport.

Presale tickets for Mt. Vernon vs. Decatur Central will be available this week for $4 at the Mt. Vernon High School athletics office. Tickets will cost $5 at the gate the day of the game.

Adult open lap swim in New Palestine

New Palestine community members are invited to an adult open lap swim available Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. each week through June.

Additionally, Wednesday evening open swims will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. beginning April 20 until June 1. Fees are $2 dollars per session.

Sign-ups for the American Red Cross Lifeguard/Waterpark Skill Class are available now through April 18.

Mt. Vernon football hosting trivia fundraiser

The Mt. Vernon football team is hosting a Trivia Night fundraiser on April 16. The event will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Fortville, 207 S. Merrill St.

Cost to participate is $100 per table with a maximum of six adult players. Teams can play with fewer than six.

Coaches’ roundtable highlights spring clinic

Events including a Coaches’ Roundtable, an Issues & Answers Forum and outstanding speakers highlight the agenda for the 2016 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Spring Clinic.

Butler’s Chris Holtmann, Ball State’s James Whitford, Indianapolis’ Stan Gouard and Tamika Catchings of the Indiana Fever are the headline speakers for the two-day gathering that is set for April 22 and 23 at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis.

In addition, Paul Patterson, the retired Hall of Fame coach from Taylor University, will make a presentation that qualifies as a class for IHSAA coaching certification.

Sessions begin at 11:30 a.m. April 22 and run through 9:10 p.m. Sessions resume at 8:30 a.m. April 23 and conclude at 12:30 p.m.

Cost to attend the clinic is $50 for current IBCA members and $100 for non-members.
