Hagerstown wins big over Royals

HAGERSTOWN — Hagerstown beat visiting Eastern Hancock 73-45 in the boys basketball regular season finale for both teams Friday.

Eastern Hancock (10-12) will return to Hagerstown on Tuesday to face Union County (12-11) in the Class 2A Sectional 41 quarterfinals. Their 7 p.m. game is the lone matchup of the night.

Union County handed the Royals a 49-40 loss on Jan. 17.

Eastern Hancock has won five sectional titles, the most recent in 2008.

Addison True and Tom Barton led the Royals with nine points each Friday. Austin Lacy added seven points.

Hagerstown’s Thorin Stage led all players with 19 points. The Tigers had a 36-24 rebounding edge.

The hosts led 16-9 after the first quarter and 34-16 at halftime.

The Royals have been led this year by freshman True (12.2 points) per game and senior Derrik Noel (12.1 ppg).

In the regular season loss to the Patriots, True recorded a game-high 16 points, while Logan Sanford (16 points) and Nevada Lakes (11 points) paced Union County. The Patriots defeated Milan 56-52 Friday to end the regular season.

Hagerstown (16-4) faces Knightstown (14-7) on Wednesday.

With Friday’s loss, the Royals dropped to 23-12 against Hagerstown over the past 30 years. Eastern Hancock beat the Tigers 68-55 in the opening round of the sectional a year ago.

Hagerstown won the JV game Friday 39-36.
