Cougars win 2nd straight game

The Greenfield-Central boys basketball team collected its second straight win on Tuesday night, defeating Connersville 41-39 at the Spartan Bowl.

The Cougars have now won three of their last four, including a 76-62 win over Lapel on Saturday night.

Against Connersville, the Cougars (6-7) used a balanced attack led by Caleb Mundell’s’ 11 points and Jack Cochran’s 10.

Will Vanduyn added seven points, while Dylan Moles chipped in five points along with Brady Mundell.

Greenfield-Central shot 9-of-11 from 3-point range and won the battle on the defensive glass with 13 rebounds. Brady Mundell and Tyler Antic both finished with four rebounds.

Caleb Mundell had a team-best four assists and two steals.

The Cougars led 22-16 by halftime and saw their lead shrink to 29-28 by the end of the third, but they hung on behind a 12-point fourth.

Against Lapel, the Cougars used a 17-point second quarter to erase an early 14-9 deficit and erupted in the third quarter for 24 points to take a 50-40 lead into the final eight minutes.

Greenfield-Central outscored Lapel 26-22 in the fourth quarter to keep the Bulldogs at bay.

Brady Mundell paced the Cougars with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting while hauling in seven rebounds and posting nine assists.

Moles finished with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting with five 3-pointers in six attempts. Cochran had 17 points with four rebounds and four assists.

Girls Basketball

Cougars keep their streak going

The Greenfield-Central girls basketball team pushed its winning streak to five straight with a 47-33 road victory over Muncie Central on Tuesday.

The Cougars haven’t lost since falling 46-22 to Mooresville on Jan. 3.

Against the Bearcats, the Cougars jumped ahead 18-11 by halftime and extended the lead with an 18-point third quarter.

Hannah Farrell finished with a team-high 13 points and 13 rebounds to go with eight assists and six steals. Brooke Herrell added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Addie Hill had nine points.

The Cougars host Hoosier Heritage Conference leader Mt. Vernon on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Marauders are riding an 18-game winning streak.

Royals fall to host Braves

The Eastern Hancock girls basketball team lost on the road to Indian Creek on Tuesday night 57-40.

The Royals (11-7) had a pair of double-digit scorers in Jocelyn Duncan with 15 points and Skyla Smith with 10, but they couldn’t overcome a 25-11 halftime deficit.

Indian Creek put together an 18-point third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Smith had a team-best nine rebounds, and Aly Spaulding had four assists with four rebounds. Caroline Stapleton added six points.

Dragons wins on senior night

The New Palestine girls basketball team used a second-half rally to win 40-24 over Beech Grove Tuesday on senior night.

The Dragons (14-6) trailed for much of the first two and a half quarters, but finished the game on a 23-3 flurry over the final 12 minutes to pull away.

The Dragons honored seniors Josie Hockett, Michaela Jones and Jordan Reid prior to the game, as well as senior manager Megan Long.

Reid finished with 19 points to lead the Dragons. Michaela Jones added eight, all in the second half. Isabella Gizzi tallied six points.

Coed Swimming & diving

Cougars sweep past Tigers in HHC dual

The Greenfield-Central boys and girls swimming and diving teams pulled off the sweep Monday at home on senior night.

The girls defeated visiting Yorktown 111-72, and the boys won 98-82.

The boys claimed 10 events with Sammy Logan involved in three, including the 200-yard freestyle, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Sam Jennings won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Anthony Nagel was first in the 50 free, 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Alex Jahrsdoerfer won the diving competition. Jaeden Peters was first in the 500 free. Travis Black was part of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

The girls won nine events led by senior Anne Marie DeKeyser who was part of the team’s winning 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and won the 50 free.

Mary Ellen Stratman won the 200 IM and 100 backstroke and was part of the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Grace Hall was first in the diving competition. Megan Coffin won the 100 butterfly and was on both winning relay teams. Rebekah Bogle was first in the 500 free. Norah Johnson won the 100 breaststroke.
