Marauders Hall of Fame induction ceremony set

The Mt. Vernon High School Athletic Department is inducting its second Hall of Fame class on Saturday.

The induction ceremony will begin at the conclusion of the junior varsity boys basketball game against Hamilton Southeastern and will feature three former Marauders that have had an impact on the history of Mt. Vernon athletics.

This years inductees include: Carolyn Oldfather, the first girls basketball coach at Mt. Vernon (1975-1979); Brett Neylon, a former cross-country and track state finalist (1981-1985) and Greg Werner, for football and baseball (1981-1985).

The junior varsity basketball game is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m., with the ceremony expected to take place sometime shortly after 7 p.m.

50-Point plateau reached by two IBCA honorees

The new calendar year is really heating up, and last week provided several statistical outbursts throughout the state, as three of the IBCA weekly honorees surpassed 40 points in a game, one winner grabbed more than 20 rebounds in a game, and another winner shot 82 percent (14-for-17) from 3-point range.

Even some of our other top nominees put up huge numbers, including one player pouring in 51 points in a game.

Kouts junior Cole Wireman (46 points vs. Rensselaer Central), Blackford junior Luke Brown (54 points vs. Winchester), Northwestern senior Tayson Parker (50 points vs. Tipton), Silver Creek junior Kooper Jacobi, Penn junior Trinity Clinton, Marion senior RaShaya Kyle (25 rebounds vs. Mississinewa), and Bedford North Lawrence junior Chloe McKnight (14 of 17 combined vs. Columbus East and Floyd Central) were selected as recipients for the week of Jan. 13-18 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Wireman is the boys’ recipient in District-1, while Clinton is the girls’ recipient in District-1. Brown and Parker share boys’ honors in District-2, while Kyle is the girls’ honoree in District-2. Jacobi represents the boys in District-3, while McKnight is the girls’ winner in District-3.

Royals to induct 2 into Hall of Fame

The Eastern Hancock Athletic Boosters will induct two new members into the Eastern Hancock Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday night. This year’s inductees are Robert Wampler and Steven Stunda.

Wampler came to Charlottesville High School as a teacher in 1962 and remained at Eastern Hancock until his retirement in 1991. He was head track coach for 16 seasons and head cross country coach for six seasons. Prior to beginning his teaching career, he served as an officer in the United States Army, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in the Korean Conflict.

Stunda is a 2011 Eastern Hancock graduate. He earned 12 varsity letters in football, basketball, and baseball.

The induction ceremony will take place at halftime of the boys varsity basketball game vs. Shenandoah that tips at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Wampler and Stunda will bring the total members in the EH Hall of Fame to 34 individuals and three teams.
