Marauders drop high-scoring game

Mt. Vernon and Fishers put on a run-scoring display Tuesday, with the host Tigers besting the Marauders 16-14.

Fishers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, and the Marauders answered back with seven runs in the top of the second. Four more Fishers runs left the score 10-7 after just innings of play.

Mt. Vernon pushed across seven more runs in the fourth inning, but the Tigers would plate the final six runs of the game — four in the fourth to tie it and two more in the sixth for the winning runs — en route to handing Mt. Vernon (5-1) their first loss of the year.

Each team had nine hits, as eight total pitchers combined to walk 18 batters in the game.

Dino Tharp, Sam McCarty and Thomas Obergfell each had two hits for the Marauders. McCarty led the way with three RBIs, while Tharp, Jaden Cappelletti, Jake Stank and Obergfell each had two RBIs.

Royals’ comeback falls short

Eastern Hancock fell to 0-4 on the year with a close loss, 5-4, to Tri on Tuesday.

The Royals trailed 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth but plated four runs in the inning to nearly complete a comeback. Ryan Burris led the offense for Eastern Hancock, finishing 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Six other Royals had one hit each.

A.J. Muegge struck out four and walked three in 51/3 innings of work in the loss.

Softball

Marauders win fifth straight

With a 12-6 win against Frankton 12-6 on Tuesday, Mt. Vernon has now won five straight after starting the season 0-2.

The Marauders had 14 hits on the night, led by Riley Hasseld. Hasseld was 4 for 5 with two doubles and four RBIs. Sydnee Perry was 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.

Kaitlyn Nugent pitched a complete game in picking up the win.

Eastern Hancock routs Morristown

Eastern Hancock jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, getting past Morristown 10-0 on Tuesday.

Through four and a half innings, Morristown held Eastern Hancock at bay for the most part. The host Royals led 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth. In the fifth, the Royals put the game away with six runs on three hits and two Yellow Jackets errors.

Micah Black and Rachel Jessup each had three hits for the Royals (3-2). Jessup and Madison Clutinger each had three RBIs.

Jessi Potts had 10 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in the complete-game win.

Track

Dragons split dual meet

The New Palestine track teams split a dual meet Tuesday with Perry Meridian at Kelso Stadium.

The Dragon boys won 77-55, while the girls dropped a 92-36 decision.

Drew Austin was a triple winner for the Dragon boys. He won the 800, 1,600 and was part of the winning 4×400 relay. Jared Reed won two individual events, the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Other individual winners were Spencer Andrews in the 400, Kyler Harrison in the 3,200, Spencer Worth in the pole vault and Gavin Hausz in the high jump.

The Dragons quartet of Austin, Abu Sissoko, Conner Kelley and Andrews won the 4×400 relay. Harrison, Owen Kleine, Connor Dobbins and Kelley won the 4×800 relay

Kaylin Casner won two individual events for the Dragons girls, taking the 800 and 1,600. Kendall Mann won the 3,200. Aden Lumbley took the shot put. The quartet of Mann, Hannah Taggart, Haley Rickey and Victoria Crowder won the 4×800 relay.

Tennis

Royals swept by Triton Central

Eastern Hancock fell Tuesday to Triton Central in straight sets, 5-0.

The Royals are now 0-4 on the season.

New Palestine swept by Fishers

The New Palestine varsity tennis team was defeated on the road Tuesday by a more experienced Fishers Tigers team 5-0.

The Dragons closest matches came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. At No. 2 singles, senior Ivey Simmons played junior MaKenzie Weber. Simmons forced her opponent to fight for every point in two close sets, losing 6-3, 6-4.

Junior Caylie Almond served well in a tough baseline battle with Fishers senior Emily Justice at No. 3. The match featured several long rallies before Justice secured victory by 6-2, 6-4.

The Dragons are now 2-3 on the year.

Golf

Royals lose to Tigers

Eastern Hancock took to the road Tuesday for a match against Triton Central at Maple Creek Golf Course.

The Royals fell to the Tigers 176-226.

Dragons zap Flashes

The New Palestine golf team won its first home match Tuesday, beating Franklin Central 169-195.

Quinn Dobbins was the match medalist with a 39. Elijah Domogala shot 42. Austin Terry and Josh Shinkle each shot 44.

“Lowest round of the year and matched the low round of last season,” coach Gregg Greene said. “We at had difficulty judging the wind and the cold temps mess with your distance control but we still could score around the greens. As a team, we averaged 16 putts, which is huge in saving your score.”
