New Pal gymnasts improve on season

The New Palestine gymnastics team improved to 8-1 in dual and tri meets on Thursday with a victory over Scecina and Roncalli.

The Dragons tallied 98.675 points. Roncalli scored 90.8 and Scecina had 87.75.

Emily Heighway and Faith Land were the top two finishers in the all-around competition. Heighway scored a 33.825 and Land totaled a 33.025.

On the uneven bars, Heighway was first with an 8.45 and Land was third (7.75). Grace Shanahan placed sixth.

On the floor exercise, Heighway won with a score of 8.65. Bailey Watkins was third (8.55), Land fifth (8.475) and Alex Black sixth (8.2).

On balance beam, the Dragons took the top three spots. Land won with a score of 8.325, followed by Heighway (8.3) and Watkins (8.225).

On vault, Land finished third (8.475) and Heighway fourth (8.425).

New Palestine is in action again on Tuesday at home against Noblesville.

Mt. Vernon loss ends regular season

Despite a strong fourth quarter, Mt. Vernon lost at Delta on Thursday, 52-42, in its last regular season game. The Marauders finished the year 6-16, including a 1-6 mark in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

Mt. Vernon fell behind by seven points at halftime against Delta but scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to stage a comeback. Syndee Perry led the offensive attack with 10 points. Sophie Williams and Megan Gawrys each scored seven points.

The Marauders return to the court next Friday in sectional play at Greenfield-Central. They will face either Greenfield-Central or Richmond, who play in the opening round.

Cougars fall to Avon in regular season finale

Greenfield-Central wrapped up its regular season with a loss on the road to Avon Thursday, 57-47. The Cougars finished the year 15-10 and 5-2 in the HHC.

Greenfield-Central now shifts focus to sectional action. The Cougars, who are hosting the sectional this season, play Richmond on Tuesday in the opening round.
