HANCOCK COUNTY — Criminal charges, including one felony count, have been filed against Jacobi Cavaletto, the man who led police on a 51-minute chase last week before he was finally stopped.

However, Cavaletto, 37, was not yet in police custody on Monday afternoon. IU Methodist Hospital, to which Cavaletto was taken after he was captured, was still listing him as patient at the Daily Reporter’s deadline. Chief Jeff Rasche of the Greenfield Police Department noted Cavaletto is under medical care until further notice. He’ll be arrested and booked into the county jail after he’s released.

Cavaletto has been charged with a Level 6 felony count of resisting law enforcement with a deadly weapon; a Class A misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance; a Class A misdemeanor count of striking a law enforcement animal; and a Class B misdemeanor count of criminal mischief.

According to court records, a new case against Cavaletto was opened Friday, June 26, two days after the chase. A warrant was issued for Cavaletto’s arrest, and he is to be held without bond pending his appearance in the court once he’s in custody.

Cavaletto was taken to the hospital after police forced his car off the road. The vehicle flipped twice in a field before landing on its wheels. Police said Cavaletto was not seriously injured in the accident and in fact resisted police when they tried to get him out of the car. At one point, Cavaletto punched and choked a police dog that had been sent in to help get him out of the vehicle, police said.

Cavaletto, who is also facing 12 other criminal charges from a SWAT incident in the summer of 2019, was out on bond when the latest event took place. A trial in that case is scheduled for Aug. 10 in Hancock County Superior Court 1. In June 2019, he held police at bay for more than 14 hours while he was barricaded in a barn on his family’s property in Greenfield.
