The Greenfield-Central softball team’s lineup was potent Thursday night, outscoring the host Warren Central Warriors 15-3 to sweep its road doubleheader.
The Class 4A No. 18 Cougars blanked the Warriors 7-0 in the first game behind a complete game shutout from Makayla Durick. The right-hander allowed just three hits and struck out seven.
Sydney Williams led the hitting attack by finishing 3-for-3. Michaela Ballman and Codey Miller added two hits apiece.
Greenfield-Central won the second game 8-3. Emily Francis had a two-out two-run hit to give the Cougars the lead in the seventh inning.
Ballman threw a complete game, allowing no earned runs. Sarah Morris and Maria Kihega each had two hits.
TENNIS
Marauders blank Golden Bears
The Mt. Vernon tennis team improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference with a 5-0 sweep of Hoosier Heritage Conference foe Shelbyville on Thursday night.Mt. Vernon’s No. 1 singles player Cassie York won 6-0, 6-1. Alaina Nelson won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Marauders claimed No. 3 singles behind Olivia Spicer’s 6-1, 6-1 performance.
The No. 1 doubles team of Emily Annakin and Brianna Partin prevailed 6-1, 6-2. Sophie Williams and Maeve McCafferty cruised to victory at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.
“Solid play on third night in a row. Singles rolling along and dubs figuring each other out,” Mt. Vernon head coach Gabe Muterspaugh said. “We were like the M.V. Mambas out there. Ready for a fun invite Saturday.”
The Marauders host an invitational tomorrow morning, which includes New Palestine, among others.
BASEBALL
Eastern Hancock drops road game
The Eastern Hancock baseball team grabbed an early lead Thursday, but host Centerville used a four-run third inning to pull ahead for good.Centerville (3-1) collected six hits and took advantage of five Eastern Hancock errors to win 6-2.
The Royals (1-2) led 1-0 in the first inning as Centerville committed four errors in the game but couldn’t get more than another run in the fourth.
Clayton White finished 2-for-4 for the Royals, and Tom Barton was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Dragons tame Falcons
Three pitchers combined for a one-hitter Thursday night, powering the Class 3A No. 5 New Palestine Dragons to a 5-1 win at home against Perry Meridian.Starter Kyle Gardner allowed one hit and struck out four through four scoreless innings, while Jacob Garrison and Cody Long came into the game in relief.
Colby Jenkins had two hits to lead the seven-hit effort for the Dragons, who drew nine walks.
The Dragons scored runs in each of the first two innings and added two insurance runs in the fourth. Jenkins was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Keegan Watson was 1-for-1 2 with an RBI, a double and three walks.
Jason Hall-Manley was 1-for-3 with a run, a RBI and a sacrifice fly.
The Dragons are now 5-0 on the season.
GOLF
New Pal tops Knightstown
The New Palestine golf team shot a 182 to win a dual meet against an incomplete Knightstown squad on Thursday at Royal Hylands.Elijah Domogala shot a 42 to win his first career medalist honor. He shot two pars and seven bogeys on the par-35 course.
Blake Barnette carded a 43, Nick Lyon had a 48 and Hunter Jones finished at 49.
TRACK & FIELD
Dragons split against Lions
The New Palestine track teams split a meet with Rushville on Thursday night. The girls won 87-45 and the boys lost 74-58 at Kelso Stadium.The girls were led in several areas. The 4×800-meter relay team of Grace Voelz, Bailey Wallace, Sarah Schwartz and Mattie Waggoner shaved 13 seconds off their record time, running in 10:46.
Kyle Dhonau had the team’s fastest time in the 100 hurdles (17.89) and 300 hurdles (51.38). Voelz was quickest in the 1,600 and ran a 13:09 in the 3,200, one second behind Schwartz (13:08).
The Dragons also received prime performances from Victoria Crowder, TeTe Hart, Courtney Smith, Annabelle Dockins, Lillie Cain and Hailee Holberton.
Jared Reed led the boys in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles. In the 100, five Dragons had personal-best times.
Brady Walden paced the team in the long jump, Spencer Corey paced the team in the 200 and 400.
“We had multiple PRs for both teams,” New Palestine head coach Kyle Ralph said. “We have made outstanding strides in the last week.”
Royals win three-way
The Eastern Hancock boys track team won its three-way meet on Thursday in dominating fashion.The Royals won 11 events to score 90 team points, finishing in front of runner-up Shelbyville (53) and Triton Central (13).
Clay Brumfield raced to two first-place finishes in the 1,600-meter run (4:45.4) and the 800 (2:05.03).
Austin Smith was first in the 400 at 53.41. Devyn Brinson sprinted to victory in the 200 with a 23.62-second run.
Gabe Blake won the 3,200 in 11:12.3. Aaron Riley captured the shot put event with a toss measured at 46 feet, 6.5 inches. Reece Burkhart won the discus with a throw of 126-0.
Kyle Moore soared to first in the long jump at 18-4.
The 4×800-meter relay team of Blake, Tommaso Gelmetti, Corbin Jennings and Brumfield teamed for a 9:05.41 run.
Smith, Caleb Beyers, Braden Dickey and Brinson won the 4×100-meter relay in 45.72. Brinson, Gelmetti, Blayze Sarber and Brumfield took the 4×400-meter relay in 3:44.38.
