STATEHOUSE – Lawmakers from Hancock County announced via press release that they are encouraging high school students who want to pursue work-based learning and credentials to apply for a Career Scholarship Account.
With approximately 2,000 spots available for the 2024-25 school year, Hoosier students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades at state accredited public or private schools can receive up to a $5,000 state-funded scholarship to help pursue apprenticeships, applied learning experiences, work-based learning and credentials attainment by applying for a Career Scholarship Account.
“It’s important to recognize that not every student’s journey involves a four-year college degree,” said State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown) in the press release. “These scholarships provide young Hoosiers with the opportunity to explore their passions, gain skills and more easily transition into the workforce after high school or pursue other training.”
Career Scholarship Accounts are available to high school students who are enrolled in courses or educational experiences that are approved by the Indiana Depart of Education (DOE).
Students who are eligible will participate in “joint career and technical education, modern youth apprenticeships, registered apprenticeships or an Indiana College Core program by an approved CSA participating entity.”
“Career Scholarship Accounts are really a game changer for students,” said State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fisher) in the press release. “They’ll have more access to outside learning opportunities can help them identify their interests and start building skills so they can hit the ground running after graduating from high school.”
Students who are approved will receive the $5,000 over four disbursements and can use the money toward qualified expenses, such as: class expenses for student’s apprenticeships/internship program; postsecondary education and/or training; equipment for student’s apprenticeship/internship program; certification and credentialing examinations; career coaching and navigation services; driver’s license; and transportation.
According to the press release, approved courses include topics such as accounting, carpentry, cybersecurity, information technology, software development and veterinary science.
State Rep. Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) said in the press release that this provides students with a chance to explore different career paths and gain hands-on experience when starting their transition into the work force.
“These scholarships can help build a great foundation to a bright future, and I encourage eligible Hoosiers to apply,” said Cherry in the press release.
Students have until Oct. 1 to apply for a Career Scholarship Account.
