GREENFIELD — The American Legion Post 119 will host the 67th annual Memorial Day Ceremony to remember fallen heroes on May 27, and a memorial motorcycle ride is coming through Greenfield the same day.
The ceremony will be at Park Cemetery, located on Ind. 9 six blocks south of downtown Greenfield. The ceremony will start at 10 a.m. and will last about an hour.
American Legion Post 119 Commander Jennifer Manning will be the presiding officer with a guest speaker. The Hancock County Honor Guard will fire rifles and honor the nation’s colors. The American Legion Auxiliary Unit will present wreaths honoring conflicts. The Park Cemetery entrance will be closed at approximately 9:45 a.m., and will reopen after 12 p.m. This ceremony is open to the public and parking will begin at 9 a.m.
Post 119 is also welcoming Run for the Wall to Greenfield on May 27 for the third annual Sandbox Motorcycle Ride arriving at 3:25 p.m. local time to the Hancock County Veterans Park located at South Street and Ind. 9. Run for the Wall’s mission is to promote healing among all veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action (POW/MIA), to honor the memory of those Killed in Action (KIA) from all wars, and to support military personnel all over the world.
The American Legion invites all Veterans and their families to help welcome the riders into downtown Greenfield. The riders will be arriving via I-70, exiting at Ind. 9 and will head south to the park. Public line-up will start at North Street and Ind. 9 on the sidewalks on both sides of Ind. 9 and continue to South Street and Ind. 9. The community is encouraged to line up starting at 3:15 p.m. Once the riders have arrived, there will be a short wreath-laying ceremony with local veterans and city leaders. After the short ceremony the riders will continue on their route heading west out of the city.
