Teen police academy applications open

GREENFIELD – Applications are being accepted now for this year’s Hancock County Teen Police Academy.

The free program is for students ages 14 to 17 and is hosted at Greenfield-Central High School. It runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10-14. Classes cover character development, defensive tactics, drug investigations, firearms training, drunken driving enforcement, traffic stops and more. Applications are submitted through the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, sheriffweb.hancockcoingov.org or the Greenfield Police Department, greenfieldin.org/government/police-department. Shirley Strawberry Festival May 18

SHIRLEY – The Shirley Strawberry Festival is coming up May 18.

The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House, 400 S. Railroad St., Shirley and will feature strawberries, vendors and entertainment.

Book donations accepted this weekend

GREENFIELD – Drop off gently-used books, DVDs, CDs and video games this Saturday at the Hancock County Public Library.

Donated items will be placed in book sales by the Friends of the Library, the non-profit charitable group of volunteers who raise money to help fund concerts, children’s performers and special projects at the library.

Drop-off is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at the Bookmobile garage on the north side of the central library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, greenfield. A tax receipt may be requested.

The next book sale is coming up May 17-20, with a preview sale for Friends members only May 16.

Passport program supports 5K fundraisers

GREENFIELD – The Passport to Hancock County 5K Series is back, encouraging people to stay active while supporting local causes in health events.

Pick up a passport that includes 11 local events. Register for races and bring your passport to each race for a stamp. After completing seven events, receive a medal. The program, sponsored by Hancock Health, promotes “fitness, philanthropy and fun” and encourages people to run, walk and roll to participate.

CASA to benefit from dining fundraiser

GREENFIELD – A dining fundraiser coming up will benefit Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Donate While You Dine is set for 5-8 pm. May 14 at Culver’s, 1846 N. State St., Greenfield. A percentage of every order during these hours will go toward Hancock County Friends of CASA to help improve the lives of abused and neglected children. Drive-through customers are included; no coupon is needed.
