Local fourth grader district winner in essay contest

FORTVILLE – Doran Bennett, a Fortville Elementary School fourth grader, was one of six district winners across the state in an essay contest.

National County Government Month was celebrated in a contest recently, hosted by the Association of Indiana Counties and Bliss McKnight. Bennett was chosen as a winner in the district and received $100.

The theme of the essay contest was “Favorite Indiana Governor” and essays were judged on how well students focused on their favorite Indiana governor and the information they provided. Bennett was awarded the prize March 25 during a meeting in Wayne County.

Students named to OU honor lists

HANCOCK COUNTY – Two students with local ties were recently named to academic honor lists at Ohio University for the fall 2023 semester.

Alaina Nugent of Fortville was named to the dean’s list, recognizing students with a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.99 with a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Caela Taylor of Greenfield was named to the provosts’ list, recognizing high-achieving, part-time undergraduate students with a 3.5 or higher GPA and between six and 12 credit hours.

Ohio University is located in Athens, Ohio.

FCCLA members earn awards

FORTVILLE – Mt. Vernon High School’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members received several awards at a state conference recently.

FCCLA state recognition included gold awards in “Beyond the Basics” and “Focus on the Basics” to Cameron Demircioglu and Jazmin Henderson; gold award in career exploration to Jazmin Henderson; silver award in career exploration to Kristyn Filsaime; silver awards in fashion trends to Ariel Bennett and Ysabelle Ferreyra; and a bronze award in food marketing to Cameron Demirciouglu.

Awards were presented Feb. 29-March 2 at the Horizon Convention Center in Muncie. More than 1,000 members, advisors, alumni and guests attended the event, where more than 800 students from 60 schools competed.

Indiana FCCLA is a career and technical student organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education.

Adult prom to raise funds for NP foundation

NEW PALESTINE — “Prom of the Century” is coming up in April, giving adults a chance to celebrate in a decades-themed party and raise money for the New Palestine Education Foundation.

The event for ages 21 and older is from 6-11 p.m. April 12 at Adaggios Banquet Hall and Event Center, 5999 W. Memory Lane, Greenfield. The event raises money for the foundation, which doles out teacher grants and student scholarships through New Palestine Community Schools each year.

The annual gala focuses on a different theme each year; last year’s casino-themed event netted more than $23,000. This year’s theme encourages attendees to dress up in their finest prom wear celebrating any decade from the 1950s through the 2000s. Guests can expect to see poodle skirts, flowers and peace signs, high ‘80s hair and more. There will be a variety of fundraising games, photo opportunities, and a prom king and queen. The 2024 NPHS Distinguished Alumni honoree will also be announced.

G-C Alumni Hall of Fame open

GREENFIELD – Nominations are open now for the next class of the Greenfield-Central Alumni Hall of Fame.

The 2024 award will honor and celebrate the successful lives and impactful contributions of Greenfield-Central graduates, including those from Eden, Greenfield, Hancock Central and Maxwell high schools. It recognizes the education provided by Greenfield-Central schools and is honored by the Greenfield Central School Foundation, which seeks to connect the community to the classroom.

Trade, technology scholarship deadline April 12

GREENFIELD – Students pursuing a trade or technical career have until April 12 to apply for a scholarship through the Community Foundation of Hancock County.

The Trade and Technology Cycle has been set up for students planning to pursue a trade or technical career who may not have committed to training earlier in the year. Donors established scholarships to help students with expenses for trade school, associate degrees or other credentials that would lead to a career in trade or technology. EH to award outstanding staff member

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Nominations are open to recognize an outstanding Eastern Hancock staff member.

The David Pfaff Excellence in Education Award is given annually to outstanding teachers by the Eastern Hancock Education Foundation. The winner receives a plaque and a check for classroom use.
