CHARLOTTESVILLE — With a big part of last year’s lineup returning, Eastern Hancock’s boys golf teams hopes to continuing achieving goals.

A year ago, the team had a goal of scoring under 175 in a dual match. The Royals achieved that in a contest against Wapahani.

“That is our base now and we only want that score to go lower,” Eastern Hancock coach Cody Hibbert said.

Hibbert has a veteran lineup returning, only No. 1 player Ronnie Johnson graduated.

The Royals return the next five players in the lineup, Corey Leece, Jacob Jackson, Parker Atkins, Zach Stephens and Bryant Sullivan.

Joel Effing, Lincoln Richmond and Conner Cook are on the heels of last year’s top returnees with their own goals of breaking into the starting give. Kameron DeLaGrange and Garrett Bridges are two of the top freshmen on the squad.

The team returned a lot of the lineup, but the Royals are still a young group. Only Sullivan and Effing are seniors. Leece is a junior and starters Jackson, Atkins and Stephens are all sophomores.

After reaching last year’s goal, Hibbert said he can see his team shooting much lower this season.

“Our team is very capable of consistently shooting scores in the 160s and 170s,” Hibbert said. “Our goal this year is to touch the 150s. Our team goal is to make a run at, and hopefully, win (the Mid-Eastern Conference), county and/or sectional tournaments.

“The talent is there. We just have to play smart for that to happen. We want to show that Eastern Hancock is a competitive force in golf. These boys are ready to show the hard work they have put in.”

Eastern Hancock opens the season Tuesday, April 9 with Muncie Burris at New Castle. The first home meet, at Royal Hylands Golf Course, is Thursday, April 11 against Daleville and Tri.
